Kimmel Center Announces Exclusive Catering Partnership with Iron Chef Jose Garces

APRIL 3, 2012

Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts announces an exclusive catering partnership with Garces Group, which is owned by renowned Chef Jose Garces, beginning June 1, 2012. Garces Catering will provide all catering and concessions at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.  Chef Garces also has future plans to open a full service restaurant this winter at the Kimmel Center with entrance from 15th and Spruce streets.

Garces Catering will create and prepare all menus for all facility events and concession bars at the Kimmel Center, the Academy of Music, and Merriam Theater. The world renowned Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is the cultural hub of the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia as home to eight performing arts organizations, the Broadway series and the best world, pop, jazz, dance and classical offerings.

“As a lover of food and music, I am thrilled to partner with the Kimmel Center to join exceptional dining and extraordinary performances together in one beautiful space,” says Chef Jose Garces.  “My team and I look forward to becoming a part of the Arts in Philadelphia.”

With eleven distinct event spaces, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts boasts state-of-the-art audio visual capabilities, an outdoor balcony overlooking Broad Street, the world-class architecture of the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall, Perelman Theater and Commonwealth Plaza, the beautiful rooftop garden, set to open in summer of 2012, and the historic Academy of Music Ballroom, offering an intimate, elegant setting. Guests can experience the ideal backdrop for any unforgettable event, whether planning a meeting, wedding, intimate dinner, or gala for up to 2,000 people, with Garces Catering to complement every occasion.

In 2010, Chef Jose Garces won Food Network’s The Next Iron Chef, making him one of a few chefs in the country to hold the prestigious title of Iron Chef America, which he appears on regularly. With restaurants in Philadelphia, Chicago, Palm Springs, Scottsdale, and three now opening in Atlantic City, N.J., Chef Jose Garces’ new catering division, Garces Catering, is a full-service event planning division that designs everything from the perfect office luncheon to an elegant wedding.

“We are delighted to have Chef Garces join our Kimmel Center family,” said Kimmel Center President and CEO Anne Ewers, “Building upon the strength of his roots in southeastern Pennsylvania, Garces has important ties to the area and truly understands the Philadelphia market.  We are confident that Garces’ superb reputation, excellence in his industry, and passion for cooking will complement the diversity of both our Kimmel Center patrons and our presentations in tandem with the artistic offerings of our eight resident companies."

“I am thrilled to offer guests a taste of my cuisine,” adds Chef Garces. An American chef born to Ecuadorian parents and raised in Chicago, Garces began his culinary training in his grandmother’s kitchen.  He spent years perfecting different cuisines in top-rate professional kitchens developing his personal cooking style; something he says is an ongoing pursuit.

Among his eight Philadelphia restaurants, Garces is owner and executive chef of Amada, Tinto, Distrito, Chifa, Village Whiskey, Garces Trading Company, JG Domestic and Guapos Tacos (a mobile truck),  all of which are counted among the city’s best. This spring, he will debut Frohman’s Wursthaus, a hotly anticipated “beers-and-brats” sausage joint. Garces also owns the 40-acre Luna Farm in Bucks County, Pa., where he grows much of the produce for his Philadelphia restaurants.

Regarding the Kimmel Center’s current catering relationship with Wolfgang Puck, Ewers adds, “We understand Wolfgang Puck’s desire to forgo establishing a restaurant business in the Philadelphia area despite their early positive reviews in event catering. We wish them well with their many fine dining establishments.”
